All of us know what goal setting means. It is setting a goal for something you want to accomplish. According to a blog in Teen Coach Academy, only 20% of teens who set goals regularly are likely to achieve them. Teens do not make the time and space to they are very consumed with their lives. It is up to us the parents, guardians, teachers, youth professionals, and mentors to make the time and place for them to ask the hard questions "What are your plans after high school?" "What college or certification program do you want to attend?". We need to show them how to research.
As a college readiness company, we have observed teens wait until their senior year and make impromptu decisions about their next steps after high school. These decisions cost them. Some teens end up with massive amounts of student debt and other teens float aimlessly without a career plan. All because they did not have the space during high school to map out their goals seriously.
If you have ever met a teen who says, "I want to go to college, " here are action steps for teens to take before their senior year to work towards that goal.
1) Taking a career assessment to determine their interests.
2) Visit college campus, teen conference on a college campus, or join a greek youth group
3) Researching college
4) Volunteering
Next week, we are focusing on college prep goal setting for parents and guardians.
