It's College Fair Season!

What do the State Fair and College Fairs have in common? There are tons of people, everyone is seeking an experience and long lines. I understand the purpose of college fairs. It allows the public to talk and connect with college admission officers. Most people do college fairs wrong. They visit every table, wait in line to speak to the college representative, and leave with tons of brochures, that they never read.  Here are our three tips to maximize your experience at college fairs.

  • Create a list 3-5 colleges, you plan to visit their table. Go with a parent or a friend. Parents, stop going on behalf of your teen. Most teens have to experience this event for themselves for it to connect.

  • If you are serious about a certain college, ask for the admission officer's business card. Send them an email the next day about your experience with them at the college fair.  Email them every 4-6 months about upcoming admission events at their university. This provides the start of a relationship with the admission officer.

  • Instead of collecting brochures, ask to be on an email list or text group.

  • Don't forget "Always Ask About Scholarship", especially Merit-Based Scholarships!

I'm truly a fan of college tours, preferably College Preview Days. Have you heard of College Preview Days? College Preview Day is similar to an open house concept for high school students and families. There are information sessions introducing you to the university about their admissions process, campus and housing tours, and the chance to learn more about some of the academic and student life programs. Most colleges host one to two college preview days per semester. We have a current list of Texas & Louisiana College Preview Day.
