Scholarship Season is the peak time when multiple scholarship foundations and organizations select recipients for their awards. This period typically runs from January to mid-May. While scholarships are available year-round, this is the busiest time for high school, college, and graduate students. So, keep applying!
One common question we receive from clients is: “What happens after I win a scholarship?”
Our first response? "You celebrate!" But after the excitement settles, there are important steps to take to express gratitude, build a relationship with the scholarship provider, and ensure a smooth transfer of funds. Here’s your post-scholarship to-do list:
What to Do After Winning a Scholarship
Obtain Contact Information
If there’s an issue with your scholarship funds, you’ll need a direct point of contact. Never wait more than two days to address any payment errors—reach out to your scholarship provider right away!
Attend Their Reception
Many scholarship organizations host receptions or award ceremonies. This is a great opportunity to network and build relationships with the organization and other recipients. Many providers also offer internship opportunities and mentorship while you’re in college!
Request Your Scholarship Funds Early
Reach out 3–4 weeks before your first day of class to ensure your funds are processed on time. The goal is to have everything squared away before you arrive on campus.
Understand the Refund Process
If your scholarships and financial aid exceed your cost of attendance, you may receive a refund. Our advice? Use 50% for college living expenses and save the other 50% for emergencies or future tuition payments.
Bonus Tip: Send a Thank-You Letter!
You were selected from many candidates—take the time to express gratitude! A thank-you letter shows appreciation and helps maintain a lasting connection with the organization supporting your education.
