The month of March is like the Super Bowl of scholarships, there are thousands of scholarships open to high school students, college students, and graduate students. Currently, we are doing a 30-Day Scholarship Challenge to highlight and make accessible scholarships that people may not be aware of.
Follow us on Instagram or TikTok to learn about 30 hidden scholarships!
There are so many myths surrounding scholarships. We want to expose the truth about our top 3 scholarship myths.
1) "Students with high family income should NOT apply for scholarships."
The truth is that all students can apply for scholarships. Many scholarships require a copy of the FAFSA or household income. However, this may be around 30%-40% of scholarships. Most scholarships are merit-based. Merit-based scholarships are scholarships based on academic or skillset performance. Scholarship searching is key for students with high family income to find scholarships. PreCollege Solutions offers customized scholarship searches and lists. Connect with us if you are interested.
2) "I applied for 10 scholarships and have not won any yet. Should I stop applying?"
For some students, applying for ten or more scholarships and not winning would cause them to give up. Here are two things you should know. Number one, some scholarships do not announce their recipients until the graduation season or summer. Patience is KEY. Number two, some students may not be winning because their essay is not as amazing as they believe. Make sure to have at least three people review your essay before sending it off for scholarships. Never give up on applying for scholarships, for every nine scholarships you complete, you may win one of them.
3) "After I win a scholarship, the funds magically appear in my account."
Wrong! After winning a scholarship, most scholarship foundations will email you the next steps or you will be invited to a reception in your honor. The next step will be to complete a disbursement form. This form will need your college ID number, address to your university, and contact information. I advise clients to obtain information from their scholarship contact, contact them thirty days before they move on campus to start the disbursement process, and write a thank you note.
Scholarships are a lot of work, but the benefit of having a free education is PRICELESS.
