This February, We Focus on All Things Test Prep
One of the biggest questions we receive from our clients is:
"How do we study for the SAT or ACT?"
Here’s what Chat GPT won’t tell you about preparing for these crucial exams.
There are four key components to consider when studying for the SAT or ACT:
1) Strategy
Students need a solid strategy. These are timed tests that require both mental and physical discipline. We advise our clients to take several timed practice tests using resources from Kaplan Academy and College Board. Additionally, reviewing their PSAT results helps identify areas where they need improvement.
2) Physical Stamina
Students who haven't taken a test lasting more than an hour may struggle with mental fatigue. Since the SAT and ACT are 3-4 hours long with minimal breaks, endurance is key. One simple strategy we recommend is bringing hard candy to eat halfway through the test to maintain focus and energy.
3) Mental Strength
According to the Cincinnati Children’s Blog, preparing teens for these tests can positively impact their scores. That's why we host test prep sessions where we cover scoring, test structure, retake policies, and provide students with a test prep kit.
This kit includes:
Hard candy
An encouragement note
Two pencils
An "I Survived the SAT/ACT" sticker
Their registration ticket
A crash study plan
4) Time Management
You cannot successfully study for the SAT or ACT in just one weekend. Let me say that again: You cannot study for these tests in one week and expect great results.
Most students need 4-6 weeks of consistent study to see real improvement. During this time, we also encourage students to take breaks from their phones—especially since they won’t have access to them during the test. For many, this can be a major distraction if they haven’t prepared for it. Practice makes perfect!
Our #1 Advice: Take These Tests Early!
Encourage your student to take these exams as early as possible. Consult a professional—such as PreCollege Solutions or a high school counselor—to review their scores and explore ways to improve before senior year.
As promised, we will post All Things Test Prep with more details on how to succeed on these exams on February 22, 2025, on our YouTube channel.
