Summer is Loading!

In less than a month, students will be returning home—college students, high school graduates, and elementary, middle, and high schoolers alike. While some families already have their summer plans in place, we have one important question:

Is college prep part of your child’s summer plans?

If you’re not sure how to include it, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here are our top college readiness tips for every age group, plus a bonus tip at the end!

Top Tip for Elementary Students:

Explore! Explore! Explore!

Take them on a college tour, let them job shadow you, or bring them to a graduation ceremony. These experiences open the door to early conversations about the importance of education and what college is all about. It's never too early to plant the seed!

Top Tip for Middle School Students:

Sign Up for a STEM Summer Camp

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) camps are a fun and engaging way to boost academic skills. Even if your child doesn’t pursue a STEM career, these camps support strong academic foundations—essential for college acceptance and scholarships. Plus, they make learning exciting!

Top Tip for High School Freshmen & Sophomores:

Volunteer and Job Shadow

Too many summer hours are wasted during these early high school years. Encourage your student to volunteer—aim for at least 50 hours, which is more than 60% of college applicants achieve. Also, use your network to help them job shadow for a day. It’s a great way to explore careers and break down myths about different professions.

Top Tip for High School Juniors:

Study for the SAT and ACT

This one’s simple but critical. Begin preparing for the SAT or ACT over the summer and aim to take your first test when school starts back up. Early preparation = less stress later.

Top Tip for High School Seniors:

Write Your College and Scholarship Essays

This is the most important summer task for rising seniors. Start writing your college and scholarship essays now. Getting a head start will make the application process smoother in the fall.

Top Tip for High School Graduates & College Students:

Work & Earn College Credit

Get a summer job—college is expensive! If you have extra time, consider taking a class at your local community college. Just be sure to check with your university to confirm the credits will transfer.

BONUS TIP: Make It Fun!

College prep doesn’t have to be boring. Mix it into your regular summer activities. Visit a college on your next family trip, turn essay writing into a creative challenge, or explore careers through YouTube or podcasts. A little intentionality now goes a long way later!
